It is where the couple hosted their lovely dinner reception for their distinguished guests. How wonderful!

HortPark isn’t just the ideal venue for solenmnisation. It features tranquil, green surroundings that will set the mood for love. Undoubtedly, it is simply great location for a couple photoshoot session right before the ceremony. In addition, merely a stone throw away is another highly rated outdoor location, the big open and hilly field in front of Canterbury Road. This spot has always been a very popular photoshoot location for wedding couples and families. It absolutely has the overseas vibes.

As the sun dipped closer to the horizon, setting behind the tall trees, it was an indication that the solenmnisation is going to start soon. Meanwhile, the couple’s families and the guests were all ready. Charles and Ying Ling exchanged their touching vows and rings on the patio overlooking the sunset. Its tangerine rays beautifully accented by a long reflecting pool. Following the Justice of Peace announced both of them as husband and wife, they kissed.

Singapore, with its rich cultural tapestry, has become a melting pot for cross-national unions. These marriages — where one partner is a Singaporean and the other hails from a different country — add vibrancy and diversity to the local wedding scene.

Where love knows no boundaries, love knows no nationality. Whether it’s a Singaporean marrying a French partner, an Indian wedding with Singaporean flair, or any other combination, these unions celebrate diversity and unity. Couples often blend elements from both cultures, creating unique ceremonies that reflect their shared journey.

Featuring in this post is Jon and Liza, a Singaporean groom and an Ukrainian bride. Having their solemnization amidst the lush greenery of the Singapore Botanic Gardens, Jon and Liza took their oath to become husband and wife. Their solemnization weave together love stories that span continents. They remind us the love transcends borders.

How wonderful to have the couple donning in Ukrainian traditional costumes during the ceremony! A wedding in traditional attire is a celebration of cultural heritage and personal style. About 4 months ago, in November 2023, an unfortunate incident occurred to me that most wedding photographers loathed. To make matters worse, two of my hard drives failed on me instead of one. They contained my previous and precious wedding works. Yes, they are past works but I still treasure them like my own wedding photos.

As a wedding photographer, I always believe in backing up and archiving the wedding images. This is crucial to ensure their safety and longevity, and my commitment to my clients to safeguarding their valuable images. I have multiple backup strategies in place, including both local storage (internal and external drives) and cloud-based solutions. Call me overly cautious, but this is how committed I am to this undertaking.

So I was recovering the hard drives, I came across WT and JX’s wedding images. Wow! It felt like a blast from the past. Their wedding felt like it just happened yesterday except that it took place eight years ago. At present, this year is my twentieth year in the Singapore wedding photography industry, hence WT and JX’s wedding didn’t feel like a long time ago.

I have not previously presented their wedding highlights. However, here are their beautiful moments from the past, better late than never.

Yoshimi, as her name suggested, came from Japan and has been living in Singapore for a long time now. Months before her wedding, she decided to go back to Japan to spend some time with her mother who is staying alone in Tokyo. While she was away, Gary took on the responsibility to prepare for the wedding. He was attentive, he was thoughtful, and he was meticulous so that Yoshimi need not have to worry about the wedding preparation.

So why did I say Gary is thoughtful? He asked me to develop some prints for his mother-in-law before she flew back to Japan after the wedding. It was very rushed indeed and the moment I handed them the prints, they were so grateful and kept thanking me profusely. Definitely put on a wide smile on my face that day. I was really glad that I made that happen and Gary’s mother-in-law can bring back some tangible memories with her back home.

The beautiful Yoshimi wore a cheongsam gown from Giorgia Couture on her wedding day. Like porcelain, the gown exudes elegance. So much so that Gary could not take his eyes off her. I’m not even exaggerating, just check out the photos below.

Gary and Yoshimi celebrated their wedding in a very private and intimate manner with their esteemed guests. Hence, for this series of photos, I am omitting their guests due to privacy reasons.

Nonetheless, this is a joyous occasion and I was truly honoured to be a part of their special day.

Wedding photography is a fascinating genre! It captures the essence of one of the most significant days in a couple’s life. As a photographer, I have always enjoyed capturing beautiful moments of people. And weddings offer the perfect opportunity to do so.

One of the things I enjoy most about wedding photography is the unique challenge it poses. Every wedding is different, with its own set of challenges and opportunities. From capturing the intricate details of the bride’s dress to capturing the candid moments of the wedding party, every shot requires a different approach. That keeps me on my toes.

Moreover, another aspect of wedding photography that I find enjoyable is the emotional impact of the images. Weddings are all about emotions, and as a photographer, it is my job to capture those emotions through my lens. From the joy and excitement of the bride and groom to the love and support of their friends and family, each moment is unique and special. It is an incredible feeling to know that the images I capture will become cherished memories for the couple and their loved ones.

Wedding photography also allows me to be creative in my approach. While there are certain shots that are expected, such as the first kiss or the exchange of the rings, I also have the freedom to explore different angles, lighting, and compositions to create something truly unique. It is a chance to showcase my skills as a photographer. And to create something that the couple will treasure for a lifetime.

Best of all, wedding photography allows me to be a part of one of the happiest moments in people’s lives. As a photographer, I am often the only vendor who is with the couple throughout the entire day, from the getting ready moments to the reception and sending off the guests. I get to witness and capture all the love and joy that surrounds the couple on their wedding day. It is an honour to be a part of such a special day and to create memories that will be treasured for generations.

Clearly, shooting Frederick and Michelle’s wedding gave me all these reasons to enjoy my job thoroughly. The excitement of being in a new venue (to me), and observing Frederick having a barber to groom him in the hotel suite, these experiences are just so brand new to me. This is why I was happily triggering my cameras away and ended up with oodles of images. So, get ready for this exceedingly prolific post!

This day had been a whirlwind of emotions for Megan and Clarence, especially Megan.

Surrounded by their beloved families and relatives and warm congratulations from attending close friends. A sincere, heartfelt and touching speech from her significant other. I could feel the myriad of emotions swirling inside Megan.

The corners of her eyes dampened as water began to collect at the bottom lid of the eye. Many times she could tilt up her head just to hold back the tears. One thing led to the other, a stream of hot tears rolled down her powdered cheeks uncontrollably throughout the day.

Yet she was smiling, giggling and laughing away to the elation and jubilation that were lingering in the air.

I have been in the wedding photography for 18 years and never have I felt such intense emotions and strong affection. It really warmed my heart even after this while as I posted this set of sublime pictures. Although most of these pictures appear unglamorous (Sorry Megan if you are reading this post), these raw feelings and endearment are such a joy to share.

This post shall serve as a reminder for the couple that they are surrounded by so much love as they reminisce over these images. Particularly for Megan who I doubt she can remember these moments when she was behind her teary eyes most of the time.

Thank you for having me as your wedding photographer, whereby I can experience such love first-hand.

I am asked over and over. “Do you edit the wedding photos?”. “How do you edit the wedding photos?”. You want things to look their best, so yes, I do edit the wedding photos. Every image is hand edited.

How I edit wedding photos

Let’s start with how I don’t edit wedding photos. A lot of photographers use Lightroom and just apply presets. Presets are often like applying the same Instagram filter to everything. I don’t do this.

Sometimes wedding photographers send a selection of your photographs to be edited by a third party, often in other countries. I am proud of the quality of my own work, therefore I never offload it to third-party editors.

I use Adobe Camera Raw and Adobe Photoshop to do my own editing. This is a more consistent and creative way of editing than using presets. Yes, it’s more work, but the results speak for themselves.

Particularly when it comes to photoshoots, we have wedding photoshoots and pre-wedding photoshoots. Therefore, when I edit these photos, I split them into two categories, basic editing and advanced retouching. All photos taken during the wedding and pre-wedding will go through basic editing as the first step. Couples who signed up for the pre-wedding photography package get to choose a certain number of photos for advanced retouching.

Enough talking, let’s delve into the topic of how I edit my wedding photos.

Basic Editing

Light editing is what I want to achieve, not radically changing things. (You might want to zoom in on some of the pictures to spot the differences after the edit)

• Refine exposure and brightness, colour balance, and contrast

• Straighten and square things up if needed, so vertical lines are vertical, horizontal lines are horizontal

• Crop the image artistically

Advanced Retouching

This is what I do in Photoshop. (You might want to zoom in on some of the pictures to spot the differences after the edit)

• Remove spots, breakouts, stray hairs, eye bags, and blemishes from the skin

• Remove unavoidable distractions from backgrounds (bins, fire extinguishers, marks on floors, etc.)

• Remove distracting objects

• Subtle skin smoothing and removing hotspots on the face

• Fix any wardrobe issues, creases on gowns, marks on suits, etc.

• Add surrounding elements to fill in the spaces

• Add dramatic lighting for aesthetic effects

• Liquidfy for either slimming or shaping

• Signature colour toning

Out of all these editing techniques, this one has probably the biggest effect. Yellows and greens tend to be oversaturated during a bright sunny day and bringing the saturation down a little bit will change the mood significantly. And I also added an earthy tone to create my own signature style.

Of course, I allow my couples to pick which toning style (natural, vibrant or Signature tone) they prefer for their photos.

Lots of time and effort

All this detailed work takes a lot of hands-on computer time dealing with files, backing up and editing. Some photos need hours of editing time each, others just need over 10 minutes. Either way, a whole wedding takes many weeks of full-time work to edit perfectly.

April has been a great month since the Government announced the easing of our community SMM (Safe Management Measures) and border restrictions. With that, we can have larger weddings and bigger groups for photo-taking. The best part, at least for me, is that I can do without the mask while shooting outdoors because my camera viewfinder always fogged up when my mask is on. What a relief!

Vienna of Giorgia Couture referred Lennard and Terri to me and they took up my photography service instantly without meeting me, neither physically in person nor via a Zoom session. I can so get used to this new norm of not having a physical meeting, but of course, I always encourage to meet up or at least make a call to break down any awkwardness or icy barrier that we might have during the actual day. So far in these two pandemic years, all my wedding couples that I have met are so warm and friendly, and I am really grateful to have them as my clients.

Lennard and Terri are also one of the nicest couples that I have ever met. Not only that they ensured that I was well-fed amidst their busy evening, but they also thanked me during their thank you speech. How many couples would thank their vendors in their speech? Not many really.
